Do chess puzzles and tactics training actually help children?
Most chess apps push puzzles at children constantly, and it's fair to wonder whether all that clicking adds up to anything. It does — puzzles are the single most effective way a child gets better at chess, and that's one of the few claims in children's chess with solid ground under it. The catch is that puzzles are also the easiest thing to do badly. This piece covers why tactics training genuinely works, how a child can solve hundreds of puzzles and improve almost none, and what makes the difference.
Do chess puzzles actually make my child better?
Yes — more reliably than almost anything else a child can do. Chess improvement is largely about recognising patterns, and puzzles are concentrated pattern practice: a child who has seen a hundred forks starts to spot the hundred-and-first without having to work it out. That part is real and well established. What matters just as much is how a child solves them. A child who guesses, gets it wrong, and clicks straight to the next puzzle is building very little. A child who works out the answer before moving, and looks at what they missed when they're wrong, is building the thing that actually transfers to their games. The puzzles are the same; the habit around them is what separates the children who improve from the ones who don't.
Why puzzles genuinely work
Chess skill, at every level, rests on recognising patterns. A stronger player rarely calculates more than a weaker one from scratch — they recognise the shape of the position, because they've seen something like it before, and that recognition points them at the right move. Building that library of shapes is most of what improving at chess actually is.
Puzzles are the most efficient way to build it. A single game might contain one or two tactical moments; a puzzle set delivers a concentrated run of them, one after another. Each puzzle is a small, self-contained pattern a child solves and files away:
- A fork — one piece attacking two things at once, so whatever the opponent saves, the other falls.
- A pin — a piece that can't move without exposing something more valuable behind it.
- A skewer — the same idea reversed, the valuable piece in front forced to move and give up the one behind.
- A discovered attack — moving one piece to unleash another waiting behind it.
A child doesn't need the names to benefit, but they do need the repetition. The tenth fork is recognised faster than the first, and by the fiftieth a child sees it on the board in a real game without consciously looking for it. That's the entire mechanism, and it genuinely works — which is exactly why it's worth doing properly rather than idly.

How a child gets almost nothing out of them
Here's the part the apps don't advertise. A child can solve puzzles for months and barely improve, and it's a common sight. It happens when the solving turns into clicking.
The failure mode looks like this. A puzzle appears, the child tries the first move that catches their eye, it's wrong, the app shows the answer, and the child moves on — having learned nothing, because they never worked anything out. Or they guess, happen to be right, and file away a correct answer they didn't understand. Either way the screen shows progress. A streak goes up, a number climbs. The child feels productive, and the parent sees activity. Very little is actually going in.
Speed makes it worse. Apps often reward fast solving, which pushes a child to move before they've finished looking — the exact opposite of the habit that wins games. A child trained to click quickly on puzzles tends to move quickly in their games too, and moving quickly is how children hang pieces.
The problem is never the puzzles. It's that solving them without attention builds the wrong habit while looking exactly like the right one, which is what makes it so easy to miss.
A child gets little from puzzles when solving turns into clicking: guessing, getting it wrong, seeing the answer, and moving on without working anything out. The screen still shows progress, so it looks productive while very little goes in. Apps that reward fast solving make it worse, because moving before you've finished looking is the same habit that loses games.
How to do it well
Doing puzzles well is not about doing more of them. It's about a few habits that turn solving into learning.
- Work out the whole answer before moving. The single most valuable habit: no touching a piece until the child can say what happens after the opponent's reply. This is where the real thinking lives, and it's precisely what rushing skips.
- Look hardest at the ones you get wrong. A missed puzzle is worth more than a solved one, because it's pointing at a pattern the child doesn't yet have — but only if they stop and see what they missed, rather than clicking past it.
- Fewer, with attention, beats more, on autopilot. Ten puzzles a child genuinely thinks through does more than fifty rattled off. For most young children a short daily set, five or ten minutes, is plenty — enough to build the habit without it becoming a grind.
This is also the clearest case for why a coach matters, and it's not about the puzzles themselves. An app can tell a child whether they were right. It can't ask what they saw, notice they found the right move for the wrong reason, or catch that they're guessing on a whole type of pattern. In our experience, the children who improve fastest from tactics aren't the ones grinding the most puzzles — they're the ones being asked, out loud, why the move works, until working it out becomes automatic. That's a question a person asks, and it's the difference between practice that compounds and practice that just passes the time.

Doing puzzles well is about attention, not volume. A child should work out the full answer before moving, look hardest at the ones they get wrong, and solve fewer with real thought rather than many on autopilot — five or ten minutes a day is plenty. A coach adds what an app can't: asking why a move works, and catching a child who found the right answer for the wrong reason.
